Calories and Energy Balance Academy

The Calories and Energy Balance Academy is a short learning programme that calmly explains what a calorie is, how the body spends energy, and how BMR and TDEE estimates are made.

Beginner · 1 module · 4 lessons · about 1 hour

Who is this for?

  • Anyone who has heard of calories but wants to know what they actually measure
  • People curious about which formula the calorie calculators on the internet actually use
  • Those who want to learn how daily energy needs are estimated and why they vary from person to person
  • Anyone who wants to understand that the numbers are starting points, not exact truths

Talk to a professional first

  • People with a diagnosed metabolic or hormonal condition, or a history of eating disorders; calorie tracking in these situations requires professional supervision
  • Anyone looking for a personalised calorie target or diet plan; this programme teaches the logic of the method, it does not set targets
  • People in periods such as pregnancy, breastfeeding or adolescence, where energy needs require specialised follow-up

What you will gain

  • You can explain that a calorie is a unit of energy and where the energy in food comes from
  • You can list the main components of the body's daily energy expenditure
  • You can calculate your own estimated BMR by hand using the Mifflin-St Jeor formula
  • You can estimate TDEE using an activity factor (in the 1.2-1.9 range)
  • You understand why these estimates can be off by around ten percent and why results should be read as ranges

Safety note

This programme is for general education; it is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it does not set personalised calorie targets. Energy needs can vary from person to person; if you have any health concerns or are planning a major change to how you eat, please consult your doctor or dietitian.

The programme's approach

Calorie maths is usually presented with a claim of precision: enter your numbers, receive your target. This programme does the opposite; it shows the formulas openly but repeats the same reminder at every step: these are estimates. Throughout the lessons you learn both the calculation itself and the limits of the calculation. So when a calculator hands you a number, you will know where that number came from and how much it can be trusted.

How to progress

The four lessons sit in a single module, and taking them in order matters: first the concept of a calorie, then resting expenditure (BMR), then total daily expenditure (TDEE), and finally the uncertainty in the estimates. Each lesson includes a small calculation exercise you can do with pen and paper. When you finish, you can test yourself with the programme assessment. Taking this programme alongside the Nutrition Literacy Academy rounds out both subjects nicely.
