Starting Exercise Safely Academy

Two things stop most people who want to start exercising: not knowing where to begin, and the fear of getting hurt. This programme takes both seriously, teaching the steps of a safe start and the language of training programmes in a calm sequence.

Beginner · 2 modules · 8 lessons · about 2 hours

Who is this for?

  • Adults who have been inactive for a long time and want to start exercising
  • Those who started before but stopped due to injury or exhaustion
  • Anyone wanting to understand terms like sets, repetitions and RPE in training plans
  • Beginners of any level who want to learn to pace themselves with confidence

Talk to a professional first

  • Those with diagnosed cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure or an active health problem; consult your doctor before starting
  • Those returning after an injury or surgery; that journey should be planned with a doctor and physiotherapist
  • Experienced athletes looking for advanced programming for competition

What you will gain

  • You can explain the difference between physical activity and exercise
  • You know in which situations to consult a doctor before starting
  • You can regulate intensity yourself using the talk test and perceived exertion
  • You can recognise the signs that mean exercise should stop
  • You can use the terms set, repetition, resistance, RPE and RIR correctly
  • You can plan progression one variable at a time, in small steps

Safety note

This programme is for general information only; it is no substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it does not prescribe individual exercise plans. If you have a diagnosed health condition, take regular medication, are pregnant, or have recently had surgery or an injury, consult your doctor before starting to exercise. During exercise, stop at signs such as chest pain, dizziness or sharp pain, and seek medical help if needed.

Key points

  • Two modules and eight lessons; first the safe start, then the language of programmes
  • The goal is consistency, not speed; small steps and clear stop signs
  • Every lesson includes a short practice task and an eight-question knowledge check
  • The programme closes with a twelve-question overall assessment

The programme's approach

The world of exercise is needlessly noisy for a beginner: contradictory advice, bold promises, complicated plans. This programme turns the noise down and focuses on two questions: how do you start safely, and what is a training programme actually saying when you read it? Our promise is modest but solid: no pledge of fast results — in exchange, you learn to listen to your own body, to regulate difficulty, and to know when to stop. In the beginning phase, the most valuable gain, before any measurement, is making exercise sustainable in your life.

Two modules, two questions

The first module, A Safe Start to Exercise, answers “how do I start safely?”: the difference between activity and exercise, the health checks before starting, practical ways to regulate difficulty, and the signs that mean stop. The second module, Understanding Programme Language, answers “what is this programme telling me?”: sets, repetitions, choosing resistance, the RPE and RIR scales, and planning progression. We recommend completing the modules in order and then checking your knowledge with the programme assessment. The academy also offers programmes on other topics.
